Expandable graphite is a remarkable material that transforms from thin flakes into voluminous, worm-like structures when heated. This unique expansion capability makes it invaluable for a wide range of products, such as foils, gaskets seals, fire retardants and fire suppressants, particularly for the construction, automotive and aerospace industries.

Natural flake graphite is treated with intercalating agents, which are usually acids inserted between the graphite layers. When exposed to extremely high temperatures, these intercalated compounds rapidly vaporise, forcing the graphite layers apart and expanding the material by as much as 300 times its original volume. This dramatic transformation occurs in seconds and creates a lightweight, insulating carbon structure.

Expandable graphite is the precursor for flexible graphite foils, which are pressed into thin, durable sheets without binders. Unlike halogenated compounds that release toxic gases, expandable graphite creates a protective char layer that insulates the underlying material from heat and flame. This makes it ideal for use in building materials and automotive components where fire resistance is critical without environmental or health risks.

The sealing industry has also embraced expandable graphite for its exceptional properties. The expanded material can be compressed into flexible sheets, gaskets and seals that maintain their integrity under extreme temperatures and corrosive conditions that would destroy most conventional materials.
